Expansion Cards - Edge Connectors
« on: December 15, 2020, 10:32:57 am »

Thought hit me - while I know the card cage has slots to keep expansion cards properly aligned up top, has anyone ever thought about using "normal" card edge connectors in place of the ZIF slots the backplane came with? Seems to me like the finger spacing is a standard size, if a bit tall.

I've used ordinary card-edge slots for my Lisa bus expansion project (which I'll get back to someday before long :) )

Works fine, you just need to grind off the end of the slot so that the part of the card without any contacts can stick out of the connector.

Patrick had noted modifying some ISA bus sockets for the job, too.

For the original mainboard, ZIF is needed because the cards have to be inserted into the connector from the side. Try this with normal connectors -- you'll need a hammer.
