New Clinton Electronics CRT vs. the original
« on: April 11, 2025, 06:13:38 pm »

Thought folks might be interested in seeing the difference between a new Clinton Electronics CEULC99F1ATE (on the left) and the Lisa's original Clinton Electronics CEULC99F1ATE (on the right). Brightness settings are as close as I could get them.

The difference in contrast is significant. However, the most pronounced difference is the ghosting as demonstrated by the old After Dark "flying toasters" screensaver.

I understand this may be due to a P4 vs. P7 phosphor spec, even though these are the same Clinton Electronics CEULC99F1ATE tube.

Need to label right and left on the video.

Thanks for doing this!

My Lisa 1 has the short-persistence "paper white" phosphor seen on the left, while my Lisa 2/10 has the long-persistence phosphor on the right. I've always suspected that the Lisa 1's monitor is original and wondered whether the 2/10's may have been replaced at some point. It was a machine sold as a Macintosh XL by Sun Remarketing, who may have cobbled it together from parts.

Same here, 2 of my Lisas (a 2/5 and a 2/10) have the short-persistence one, while the third (sold by Sun as a Mac XL) has the long persistence one. So I bet you're right about Sun replacing them with random parts!

You'll find that after some hours of run-in the new tube will have the green after-glow like the original, though not to the same extent.

I noticed this with the NOS tube I put in one of my systems... after perhaps 150 or 200 hours it has after glow now.
