Lisa Serial Port Diags?

Is there a serial port diagnostic tool, perhaps for use with or without a loopback?

I followed the instructions for making a lisa LocalTalk cable, connected it via PhoneNet to my LocalTalk network and.... nothing.

Tried under 6.x and 7.1

I used this guide to make the cable:

There are diagnostic tools, but AFAIK, there isn't an inexpensive one that would help with troubleshooting LocalTalk specifically. I find the pass-through boxes with red and green LEDs are generally useful for serial troubleshooting at lower baud rates.

What are your actual connections are what are the ends connected to?

eg. A = DB25M connected to Lisa, B = DE9F connected to 512KMac Phonenet connector

7?
19?
20?

The LisaFAQ item doesn't specify a cable per-se: you need to "connect TxD+ on computer A to RxD+ on Computer B, etc.", or when connecting to eg. a PhoneNet box, you need to move RxD+ from the Mac pin position to the Lisa's RxD+ pin position.

Further, DB25 and DE9 connector pins are usually physically numbered so are easy to verify, but if you are adapting a MiniDIN 8, then there can be confusion due to the mirror images of connector side, solder side, male, and female; you may need to triple check your pin mapping if working with MiniDINs. Noting that pin 4 is closer to pin 3 is sometimes enough to understand the orientation.

what I have is this:

Signal   DB25   MiniDIN 8
TxD -   2      3
RxD -   3      5
RxD +   19      8
TxD +   20      6
GND           7           4

A   B
2   3
3   5
7   4
19   8
20   6

I don't have a Mac Plus PhoneNet connector only the newer style.

I checked the connections on from the male DB25 to the FEMALE MiniDin 8 with an Ohm meter.

This is the pin chart I used. The DB25 had pin numbers.

I presume you mean you have a MiniDIN MacPlus PhoneNet box, not a DE9 512K Mac PhoneNet box.

Assuming the DB25 connector is male and plugged into the Lisa, and the MiniDIN 8 on your adapter is female and has a MiniDIN PhoneNet box plugged into it, I think your connections are correct.

So you open the chooser, select AppleShare, and don't see the server(s) on your network... what System(s) are the server(s) using?

Do you have an AppleTalk printer you can test (LaserWriter or AppleTalk ImageWriter)?

Do you have two (or more) devices aside from the Lisa that can communicate via the same LocalTalk network, or is it possible the problem is with the network instead of the Lisa/connection?

edit: the image in the previous post is a webp not a jpg, and shows pinouts of male and female MiniDIN 8 connectors (no wiring).

System 6.0.8
System 7.1

Sadly no.

Yes, I have three Macs, LCIII, IIsi, and PowerBook 5300, all connected via LocalTalk. The IIsi is running AIR and seeding 2 Zones that show up correctly on all of the LocalTalk Macs. Authentication, file transfer, and all work great. I have used two known-good PhoneNet connectors on the Lisa.

Check you've got the LocalTalk network connected to Serial B (closer to the PSU).

If the System(s) installed on the Lisa were used for experimenting with SCSI Ethernet, try a System installation that hasn't been modified by the AppletTalk over Ethernet & TCP software installers. (IIRC, they should be able to co-exist allowing switching between them, but it does present a possible conflict.)

Yes, has the (oddly lowercase) B.

Yes, I started with barebones System 6.0.8 but I might give it another go.

Thanks for the help BTW!
