Title: LisaOffice and Italic w and v - what's the story?
Post by: MyTechAttic on March 22, 2023, 03:57:05 pm
Hi everyone and thank you for allowing me to join!  I have a Lisa 2/10 that I have just spent the last 4 days on reviving - super long story short, LisaOffice 3.1 is running from the internal drive without trouble - for now  ;)

My question is around something I noticed all over LisaOffice - in the splash screens and instructions of the install floppies, and in the system when booted.  Every single occurrence of the letters v and w are italicized, and the other letters are not.

Anyone here have the back story on why this is so?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Paul, I think you might just be seeing what the letters look like. It is distinctive!

Compare with letters w and v in this screenshot: http://toastytech.com/guis/lisaofficeinstall.png

Congrats on getting your 2/10 working again!

The italic v and w are my favorite part of the office system UI. :)

I am glad others are seeing this.  I though I was going a bit crazy - who wouldn't after spending around 16 hours over 4 days getting their Lisa 2/10 running.... Still, I am left wondering why these two letters only?  Maybe time to hunt down the LisaOffice developers and try to ask... some secret cryptic Apple Easter egg?

The font's designer, Annette Wagner, spoke at the CHM's event celebrating the 40 year anniversary of Lisa. Here is a recording (https://youtu.be/oCvQbGXPtBU?t=2335). I assume one could ask her about her designs, although she seems to be enjoying life now as an artist in Montana and may or may not want to be bothered by weirdos like us :)

It's funny, I never thought of the letters as italic, I just thought of them as retro-futuristic  :)
