Apple, talk machine identification

I can't find any documentation on how machines are identified on an Apple talk network.

I checked in the AppleTalk networking administrator's guide and unless I missed something I didn't find what I'm looking for

I'm working on a small System 7 extension so a Lisa running MacWorks Plus shows up on AppleTalk as "Macintosh XL" instead of "Macintosh Plus".

What I've found so far with nbplkup:
- Every Mac registers <name>:Workstation on socket 4.
- It also registers <name>:<model>, e.g. "Macintosh IIsi", on socket 253.
- The model name is already registered before extensions load.

Two questions:

1. Which part of System 7 registers the model name, and where does it get the string? Is this documented anywhere?

2. Do network scanners show whatever is registered on socket 253, or do they only recognise a fixed list of model names?

Any pointers appreciated.

I'm guessing you need to look for "Inside AppleTalk" which is the AppleTalk portion of Inside Macintosh.

edit: maybe Inside Macintosh has some high level details too.

edit 2: I may have misunderstood; since you wrote about creating a System Extension, I thought you wanted to register your own device, but maybe you meant "how does the user name their computer?"

If so, on System 7, try the "Sharing Setup" control panel.

edit 3: Network scanners don't report model names AFAIK; I don't think the model name is shared by typical AppleTalk software I suppose the assertion that <name>:<model> is registered counters that. The model name may be the default for the computer name in Sharing Setup.
