This weekend, some students from Northern KY University spent a couple of hours using my LISA 2-10 running LOS 3.1.

They created some documents in LisaDraw and decided to CHANGE a project they were working on to include vintage computing.

They very much want to get a copy of one of the graphics files they created on the lisa to include in their work.

I have NO IDEA how to get a file off of a LOS profile drive image.

I remember reading at one point Apple had made some kind of software for migrating from LOS to MacOS, but that was just a footnote months ago.

Can anyone please help?

You haven't lived until you've heard the sound of a Sony 400k drive.

The migration kit will convert the LisaDraw document to a MacDraw document, probably with some imperfections.

IIRC, MacDraw can save as PICT, which may be sufficent if all they need is an image. You can also use the LaserWriter driver to "save as" a PostScript file (I don't recall if that arrived in LaserWriter 7 or 8 ) which likely can be opened on a modern computer.

If you need editable components, then you may need to go through some more conversions. eg. MacDraw II can open MacDraw documents, with some imperfections, and I think some modern draw apps can open MacDraw II documents.

If all else fails, I think Stepleton did some fancy footwork to capture output-to-imagewriter serial data to make the Lisa Video Board documentation found on a Twiggy recently accessible.

How do you get it OUT of LOS? Mac floppies won't mount.

Part of the function of the migration kit is transferring the converted files to a Mac Volume. IIRC one of the options was via a shared LOS/MacWorks formatted ProFile/Widget, and I expect writing to a Mac formatted floppy (MFS 400K) is another.

This is the toolset you're looking for: https://macintoshgarden.org/apps/lisa-macintosh-migration-tools

I'm pretty sure I saw the documentation for the Migration Kit on archive.org, but can't find it now.

It looks like the garden files don't include the manual... can someone provide a link?

Congrats on the successful show. As sigma7 points out, there is the "print to a fake ImageWriter" method which is probably my own first port of call. It is a bit involved and only results in a bitmap, not an image that you can edit practically in a contemporary draw program like Inkscape.

You basically have to set up a computer to receive the raw data that the Lisa sends to an ImageWriter over a serial port. This winds up giving you a blob of binary data which is not of much use to anyone. Next you need to prepend a special bit of postscript code to the blob, and this gives you a postscript file that PS printers and viewers can understand. From there you can convert to a raster image format of your choice.

Equipment required is a modern computer with a serial port, plus a null modem cable with a DB-25 connector for connecting to the Lisa. My old post with additional detail is here: https://lisalist2.com/index.php/topic,495.msg3670.html#msg3670
