Well, I don't claim to be a leading expert on ProFiles, but I have about 10 of them in varying states of repair and all have "stock" Seagate ST506 or 412 mechanisms (stepper granulatiry excepted). No brakes of any sort, just a Hall-effect sensor on the flywheel to provide feedback for the motor servo and a track-0 optical detector on the stepper motor shaft (also external).
