RE: Broken Floppy Drive

All the Lisa drives are pretty much the same as the 400k drives in the original Mac and the external ones, and are interchangeable.  The LisaLite card on the side of the floppy cage is for Lisa 2/5s, the ones without are for those with a 2/10 I/O board that have a single chip IWM. It doesn't affect the type of floppy drive you can use, just how it connects.  Some Lisas may have an 800k  floppy upgrade. If yours did it had an upgraded I/O ROM. If it does it won't work with Lisa OS AFAIK. but there may be a way to get 800k floppies hooked up to a Lisa with the normal I/O ROM intended for 400k ones by disconnecting a pin or two.  Hope this helps, but first things to do is to take the drive itself apart, gently clean the r/w head without damaging the felt pressure pad at the top, and to clean and lube as per the Lisafaq entry.  Alternatively try to find a replacement drive, or get a floppy drive replacement from https://www.bigmessowires.com/shop/product/floppy-emu-model-b/ once it's back in Stock.  It might just be it needs a bit of lithium grease to fix. See: http://lisafaq.sunder.net/lisafaq-hw-floppy_lube.html Pls forgive the typos, wrote this on a cell phone while eating breakfast, might not be fully awake yet. ☺

Dear LisaList,

Finally after owning two Lisa’s for close to 10 years I found time over memorial day weekend to get things up and running and install a XProfile I’d had in storage for several years (thanks John).

Unfortunately in the chassis I was able to bring up the XProfile in the 3.5” floppy disk drive is no longer functional. It’s the floppy drive version that doesn’t need the daughter card on the side of the cage. The bottom is marked SONY OA-D34V-22 and the other side is marked ASCO September 1984. I do have a working floppy disk drive in my other Lisa chassis but it’s the kind that does need the side mounted daughter card so I’m guess it can’t be moved over into the working chassis?

Is there anyway I can find a replacement or repair for this floppy drive? If not what’s my best path to getting a working floppy drive installed in the Lisa?

BTW - I’m an EE by training and have access to tools.

Thanks in advance for any feedback and support. I’m excited to have a functional Lisa at last.

Geoff
