As Ray said, they're in transit to him. I discovered that I was using the wrong drive on my Mac II (d'oh!) -- when I put them into the 800K drive, rather than the SuperDrive (I'd mentally reversed their positions), dd was able to pull full images of disks A and B with no errors!

But then my hard drive failed. >:-(

While Ray has the disks, I'm going to try to get A/UX 3 installed on another machine (and another drive), bring myself back up to speed on A/UX disk partitioning and duplication, and rescue any data I can from the Mac II's internal drive. My previous A/UX installation was 1.1.1, which I believe may be of some historic interest itself. If I can recover enough of the drive's data, I'll bring the Mac II back up under A/UX 1.1.1; if not, I'll try to do it under A/UX 3, assuming that version supports that machine (and its 800K drive).

I'm learning several lessons from this:

  1. Never underestimate the longevity of data on a floppy.
  2. Never underestimate the longevity of old computing equipment.
  3. Never OVERestimate the longevity of old computing equipment. Just because it starts right up after being idle for a decade or two, don't assume it will keep running. Sigh. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "LisaList" group.
