The switch disconnects the battery.
I believe it was intended to be switched off for storage. Since the battery lasts only a day or two when power is disconnected, it should probably be turned off whenever you unplug the Lisa for more than a couple of hours. Though you need to remember to turn it on again to charge the battery...
The battery keeps the clock running when power is lost, it also preserves a few bytes of parameter RAM.
