Sounds interesting. Can you email some photos of this drive?

I can't say if it would be good or bad to try this drive with another drive's controller. Others on this list with more hardware experience I think would be able to hopefully provide a good answer here. If this was my drive, I would be very hesitant to swap controllers since not sure how compatible the controller would be. I could easily see a situation where the older drive had a different electrical design which was incompatible with newer drives. FWIW, I would base this suggestion on the Hippocratic oath of "do no harm".
