Jack,

My Widget was doing this when I got my Lisa. I tried cleaning connections, made sure the brake on the head wasn't stuck, etc... but nothing worked. Finally in frustration I grabbed the head motor and moved it around violently as the drive was on... and it started working!

After you have eliminated all other possible faults perhaps try moving the head around manually while the drive is on. Now that might also break the drive forever, but if it's already broken...
