LOS Installation Problem

Hi,

I'm in the midst of repairing and restoring a Lisa 2/5. The last problem is turning out to be a stinker, though. I have attached several different ProFile drives, in both 5M and 10M flavors. All of them function properly in the sense that MacWorksXL will install and boot from them. Two have been freshly low-level formatted on my Apple III and, according to Patrick Schaeffer's metric of seeks to track 77, do not appear to have any spared sectors.

Regardless of which drive is attached, LisaTest fails the ProFile test and LOS refuses to install, claiming it cannot write to the disk. This just seems bizarre, because in neither case does it even appear to access the ProFile! The only activity occurs during LOS detection of attached drives (a brief seek). Under LisaTest, not even a flicker. It just pauses for a bit and fails the test.

Is there something fundamentally different about the hardware interaction with the drive under LOS/LisaTest? If these drives all have too many spared sectors, how would I tell this conclusively? I'm a bit lost at the moment.

(If this message is a dup, my apologies. My first post never appeard on the list)

Steve
