Absolutely spot on ! Thanks.

After a few days with the power off, just to be sure ;-) I tried out your suggestions, VERY carefully. After a couple of minutes of trial and error I could get rid of the V hold problem and shift the display to the left a bit. Apple Key and S got me into the Service mode (which I am playing with now !) The glue on the pots was already broken so it looks like someone has had a crack at this before. I'll leave it booted for a few hours and see what happens (there is the occasional 'jump'). Now I can read my screen, I can see that the Widget is dead too ! Error 82 !
