FWIW, the major issue here is speed.
The Xenix driver has a poorly written interrupt handler; the bug doesn't appear with slower drives such as the original Apple ProFile, but the X/ProFile responds much more quickly, which causes the bug to appear.
The X/ProFile firmware could be adjusted to make the patches unnecessary, but that makes it noticably slower. Since only Xenix is affected, the patch seemed to be the best solution.
