Do Mac 512/Plus games work on Mac Works?
« on: March 15, 2025, 09:59:51 pm »

I have tried several games that come on 400k or 800k images with the FloppyEMU.

None have worked so far.

Is it because of the screen size?

Are you running an XLerator?

Are you running Mac Works II plus?

Which ones in particular have you had trouble with? And are you using MacWorks XL? MacWorks Plus? MacWorks Plus II?

In my experience, without a PFG, MacWorks+ 1.1h will likely provide the best compatibility and works with System versions up to 6.0.3. But if you do have a PFG and are running MW+II with something like System 6.0.8, and are still having issues - those games might be trying to access hardware directly. Is the OS reporting errors or what are the symptoms?

Dark castle will only work if you have a DAC for sound.

I vaguely recall a "KillSound" INIT that (I even more vaguely recollect) made it possible to run games that otherwise didn't work because of the different sound hardware.

Are you folks experimenting with games familiar with that or should I dig up a copy of the INIT for you to try?

I don't want to put you out but that would be very cool if you have it handy... ;)

Yes! Please start digging :)….I don’t own a DAC card. Should have
bought one when John W. was selling them  on E bay.
                Thank you!

VintageMicros.com has quite a few products that are available as special order or build-to-order; I believe the LisaDAC is one of them.

ie. you have to email and ask about ordering it.

I vaguely recall a "KillSound" INIT

I see the MW+II Installation Checklist (one of the attachments in the MacWorks Plus II Manual topic) says:

Quote
Updating your System Folder
  4. Remove the following CDEVs from the System Folder as they are either not compatible or are no longer required with MacWorks Plus II; ... KillSound and associated files

Regardless, I suspect it does have applicability to MW+ 1.0.18 & 1.1h, so I will attach it here once I locate it.

Attached is a folder that was stuffed with DropStuff on MacOS 9.2 (so file types should be preserved), and then Zipped on OSX (to transit the internet without translation). The folder contains the KillSound INIT as well as the source code and readme.

I've forgotten (and maybe things have changed) what is the best/easiest format to upload binary files destined for MW+/II... let me know what works better than .sit +& .zip -- perhaps that needs its own topic.
