Yes, as you have discovered, there is (or was) a black plastic pin that sticks up to detect the disk (on the right) or the write protect tab (on the left). These black plastic pieces are mirror images of each other, more or less.

These always seemed like a likely source of failure to me, but AFAIK, breaking one off is not a common problem, so you might find a replacement from a junk drive that suffered a different problem.
