Was it a translucent, beige (sort of), rectangular capacitor right at the bottom of the power supply board?

It is part of the line filter circuit (surge protection), and tends to get very fragile with age. Without it, a surge protector/UPS might be a good idea. Evox Rifa still make them (PME 271M 0.1uf) if you fancy a bit of soldering...

Can't help on the widget other than suggesting to check the cable with an ohm meter.
